The 100th monkey phenomenon - a story about impact

The Japanese monkey, Macaca Fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.
In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.
An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.
This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists. Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Day 5 The last day of the Forum was dedicated to the evaluation of the event and its planned follow-up in each association. The participants and the Planning team left the hospitable Obidos area with sadness but looking forward for having an IMPACT once back in their countries. Good luck to all......

Day 4 Day 4 of the Forum was, again, filled with a great deal of opportunities for learning and sharing. After a first round of workshops in the morning, our keynote speaker, João Armando Gonçalves, delivered an inspiring intervention on the theme of "Impact". The most brave and vertigo-free participants have started the afternoon with an exercise on the high-ropes course of Campo Aventura before heading to the last round of workshops in the Forum. Day 3 Day 3 at the Forum brought more workshops and some time for advancing the work on the cooperativas. 5 Network sessions were organised to bring together people with specific interests ("gender", "sustainable development", "new ways of working with Cub Scouts", "How to produce eduaional materials" and "Scouts of the World"). The day ended "in style", with a village game in the stunning medieval streets of Obidos (and its Chocolate Festival...) and a fado night at a typical Albergaria....
